Is your roof asbestos cement?
Many Cape Town homes, flats, farms and factories built before the 1990s still have asbestos cement roofs. Ageing sheeting often shows:
- A grey, fibre-cement look with a rough, eroded surface
- Moss, lichen and dark streaks along the corrugations
- Cracked or chipped sheets and rusted fixings
- Brittle edges around vents, ridges and gutters
Don’t drill, cut, sand or pressure-wash it. Contact us and we’ll identify the material and advise whether encapsulation or removal is right.
Weathered sheetingAsbestos removal FAQs
Can I remove an asbestos roof myself?
No. In South Africa, asbestos work falls under the Asbestos Abatement Regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and must be carried out by a Registered Asbestos Contractor. Cape Asbestos Solutions is a Registered Asbestos Contractor (RAC).
Who handles the paperwork?
We do. We draft the plan of work, notify the Department of Labour and manage all administrative and legislative requirements on your behalf.
Where does the asbestos go?
Removed asbestos cement products are packaged and taken by registered and approved transporters for legal disposal at registered landfill sites.
What do I receive when the job is done?
A clearance certificate that confirms the area, building and/or premises are free of asbestos.
Should I remove or encapsulate my roof?
It depends on the condition of the sheeting and your plans for the building. Sound sheeting can often be sealed with asbestos encapsulation, while damaged sheeting or demolition work calls for removal. We’ll advise after seeing the roof.
